Things To Consider When Buying A Security System

There’s no shortage of security systems on the market today. When looking at the right choice for your home, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. While every security system company has “consultants” who are supposed to help you determine what you need for your home, they are also commissioned salespeople.

That means searching for the right home security system requires you to self-educate, ask the right questions and make critical considerations.

Here are some points to consider as you shop:

•  The most dependable security system operates on household electric power, with emergency backup power provided by a battery to assure operation during emergencies.

•  The security system should alert you to battery failure and have a feature for recharging the depleted battery. Make sure the company you choose has a service and maintenance contract that includes automatic battery replacement when needed.

•  Your security system should have a visual or audible signal to alert you to malfunctions.

•  Components that can activate or deactivate the security system or render it otherwise inoperative or ineffective should be tamper-resistant.

•  Quality security systems should should have at least one-year manufacturer AND installer warranties.

•  The security system should be capable of being easily upgraded to meet new needs or add safety features such as smoke, fire, medical, water, and temperature monitoring.

•  The company selling your your security system or contracting for monitoring service should offer prompt and effective service in case of malfunction.

•  Choose a security system provider who will help you understand your security system thoroughly. Make sure to learn about its operating system and receive verbal as well as written instructions covering all circumstances.

When you finally make the important decision, take the time to register your home security system with your local law enforcement. In some cities such as Miami and Charlotte, ordinances require you to register or face serious fines.

Never make a decision with which you’re not completely comfortable. Check with the Better Business Bureau for the quality of a prospective provider. Also consult resources like “Consumer Affairs” magazine which provide independent assessments of different companies.
