Security System Owner Responsibilities

Home security systems give us immense benefits including the privilege of feeling secure at night and when we go away. With every privilege come costs and responsibilities. Being a security system user also means being a responsible security system user.

The Security Industry Alarm Coalition(http://www.siacinc.org/Default.aspx) advises home security system users to consider a few points on safety and courtesy regarding their alarms.

1. A security system does not replace the need to call 911. As a rule, law enforcement dispatch will place an alarm call button for a prowler on a lower priority level than a 911 call. While there’s nothing wrong with hitting your security system call button and getting additional help, calling 911 in case of imminent threat is still the best solution.

2. Learn how to cancel a false alarm. If you accidentally hit a panic button, or more importantly if someone or something trips your security system alarm by accident, you need to be able to head a false alarm off at the pass. Don’t leave the house until you’ve spoken with your security system provider and given the correct password to end the alarm. Make sure everyone in your household knows the cancellation password and has the phone number for the security system company – just in case.

3. Have your security system serviced every 24 months. Just like cars and all machines, security systems need to be checked, upgraded and have worn out parts or batteries replaced.

4. Take steps to prevent bad weather alarms. Security systems tend to sound off in bad weather because their batteries are low. Make sure to change security system batteries every three to five years and more frequently if you experience frequent power outages. Also make sure to have your security system services after cold and damp weather. Fixtures, doors and windows warp in bad weather and can easily set off false alarms.

5. Update your emergency contact list regularly. Make sure your local law enforcement have the number for your local law enforcement agency as well as all the numbers to reach you and any other security system users in your household. If the security system company can’t reach you, you may have difficulties with police reports and may not receive the maximum security and law enforcement response.
