Responsible Security System Owner’s Checklist

home intruderNobody gets a home security system because they are fun and sexy. The serious, responsible parts of our personalities drive us to acquire security systems. We do it to protect our homes, ourselves and most importantly, our families. That’s why selecting, installing and using a home security system requires a thoughtful, comprehensive approach.

When choosing your home security system, ask yourself the following:

•  Have you talked to more than two different security system companies?

•  Will they provide references?

•  Are the installation company and the monitoring station U.L. listed?

•  Do you know how and where the alarm system is monitored?

•  Have criminal background checks been completed on the installers and sales personnel?

•  Do you know the duration of the contract and under what conditions the agreement can be cancelled?

•  Does the service contract allow for emergency repair service within a specific time?

•  Is the installation company offering a warranty on the security system?

•  Is there an operating manual offered with the security system?

•  Is there a five to ten day resting period available during which you can practice using the security system without police being dispatched? Statistics show there is a higher rate of false alarms during the first few days of installation.

•  What are the verification options and the dispatch cancellation procedures?

•  Will the security system be able to identify which zone or area the signal is coming from?  This allows service to target the problem area to be addressed.

•  Do you know how the security system works?

•  How many window and door contacts and motion sensors are being recommended? Are motion sensors dual technology i.e. motion/infrared, and how does the backup battery work?

•  Does the security system have an audible device? Audible devices are not only a deterrent but, also notifies you of an activated alarm.

•  Is the security system equipped with double action panic buttons to minimize an accidental trip?

•  Have they explained what happens if the telephone line is cut and offered alternative backup not dependent on the telephone line?

•  Have they advised you of any laws or regulations in your area related to false alarms?

If you are purchasing and installing your own security system, consider these things:

•  Check with your local jurisdiction to see if you are required to register your security system.

•  When purchasing a security system you must remember that you are a vital part of the alarm function. You must completely understand how the security system works, what it does, and what you need to do to properly maintain it.

•  Ensure all users of your security system receive adequate and thorough instruction on using and testing the system. Ask your security system company to provide you written instructions as well as a physical demonstration.

•  Ensure outside audible alarms are set to sound for no more than 15 minutes before resetting.

When it comes to using your security system, you need to be adept. Ask yourself if you have taken all of these precautions and steps:

•  Are you and others who use the security system fully educated on its proper operation?

•  Does everyone with a key to your home know how to operate your security system?

•  Do you take care to eliminate possible causes of false alarms?

•  Have you rehearsed alarm cancellation procedures with all who use your security system to cancel accidental alarm activations?

•  Do you communicate with your security system company regularly, advising of schedule changes, problem areas or maintenance needs?

•  Do you notify your security system provider when phone numbers or situations change?

•  Do you have your security system instruction book and security system company names and telephone numbers readily available in order to call and cancel accidental alarm activations?
