Make A Smart Choice When Choosing Your Security System

You know you need it and you’ve decided it’s time. Getting a home security system is a great step toward security for your home and family. It’s also an important piece of equipment on which you intend to rely. That means you don’t want a poorly suites security system or a second-rate device.

It’s important to do your homework and be smart about how you select your security system.

•  Contact several different security system companies. Ask if they are members of your state’s burglar and fire alarm association.

•  Ask each security system company if it is licensed through the your state department of consumer affairs. Then check with the state to see if there any unresolved outstanding complaints.

•  Contact the Better Business Bureau (www.bbb.org) to find out if any complaints have been flied against the companies.

•  Narrow the field to three or four security system companies. Arrange an appointment with each company when all members of your household will be present. Be sure to ask for the name of the person who will be calling on you, and verify his or her identification upon arrival.

•  Ask for an inspection, demonstration and a quotation in writing. Also ask for and check references.

•  Study each contract to ensure you know exactly what you are getting. Consider the merits of leasing vs. buying.

When you finally make your decision, take care to use your security system to its maximum capability.

•  A security system is only as good as its user. Be sure that the security system installer explains how the security system works thoroughly and answers all of your questions. Everyone who will be using the security system should be present during this educational process.

•  Many municipalities are now charging fines for excessive false alarms, as they cost taxpayers thousands of dollars a year by taking police officers away from other duties to investigate the alarm. For this reason, you should be very careful in arming and disarming your security system.

•  If your security system develops any problems or you have further questions regarding it, contact the installer.
