Electronic Security Association Top 10 Pieces Of Advice

The Electronic Security Association (www.alarm.org) is a trade association for the security system industry which researches issues related to security systems. It works with consumers, dealers and government agencies to further the use and science of electronic security systems.

The ESA had developed ten pieces of advice for consumers selecting a home security system:

Ask your insurance agent, friends, family or neighbors for referrals.

Visit the ESA website for a list of member companies throughout the country who have agreed to abide by the National Code of Ethics.

Check with several security system companies to see if their employees are trained or certified by a nationally recognized program like the ESA’s National Training School.

Ask security system companies for proof of state and local licenses.

Find out if security system companies conduct any pre-employment screening such as drug tests and background checks.

Take advantage of government and quality control agency options such as your local police department’s Crime Prevention Department, state licensing agencies, Consumer Protection Agencies, and the Better Business Bureau. Inquire about any past interactions with, or history on your prospective security system companies.

After you’ve narrowed the field to three or four security system companies, ask for the name of the person who will call on you.

When the representative visits, ask to see company identification.

Ask each security system company representative for an inspection, recommendation and a quote in writing. Use a checklist to compare different packages and price quotes.

Never feel pressured to sign anything. Be cautious of those who push you to sign a contract quickly or who may be offering unusual deals or incentives.
