DIY Perimeter Protection Using Honeywell Security Components

guard dogEveryone wants to get the best value for their money. If you’re someone who is handy, good with home improvement projects and capable of analyzing complex system, buying and installing your own security system may be a good choice for you.

Get components from a store like which offers quality Honeywell Security products.

They most important part is to secure your home’s perimeter. Examine all the potential points of entry  doors, windows, attics, storm cellars – and choose a security system which can reach and monitor them all.

Installation of the perimeter devices is straightforward and requires a sensor attached to each door or window. The interior aspects of your security system require more work.

If you have animals, a “pet alley” will be necessary to avoid false alarms. A “pet alley” is created by using a special lens that prevents a sensor from detecting motion near the floor. This option can allow your pet to roam the area when the security system is on. However, jumping or climbing inside the detection area can set off the alarm.

Be careful to avoid putting the sensors where heating ducts or sunlight can cause temperature changes which can set-off a false alarm.

Sensor price usually correlates with quality and accuracy. More expensive sensors are far less likely to trigger false alarms. More expensive security systems have formulas and double checks that reduce the possibility of temperature changes, insects and flapping drapes resulting in false alarms.

Dual technology sensors, using both infrared and microwave detection also reduce false alarms but are very expensive. You can also aim two sensors at the same area from different angles, and wire them to require dual activation before activating the alarm.

You will want at least two or three perimeter detectors backed up by a motion sensor. But consider the size and layout of your home and how much space you need to protect. If you have a large, multi-storey house, consider more sensors.

Reasonable perimeter protection with good, well placed motion sensors will greatly enhance your home security. A good security system should have a remote keypad that is at a convenient location for entry/exits while the main control panel should be placed somewhere in the interior of you home where it is not accessible to intruders.
