DIY Security Systems
As an avid DIY-er, one of the most enjoyable projects I ever took on was installing the security system we currently use in our home. Understand something. I’m not a huge fan of working with electricity based on passed “shocking” experiences (no pun intended) so this project was a bit challenging at times. My first bit of advice is that you should hire a professional electrician to do the wiring if you’re uncomfortable about working with electrical connections and installation. Just remember that you need to exercise common sense when undertaking a DIY project involving security systems.
One of your primary considerations regarding security systems is to choose one that your home insurance carrier is going to be confident and satisfied with. Another key point here is that a DIY installation of a home security system should not significantly affect your homeowner’s insurance premium. My advice is to consult with your insurance agent first before purchasing any of the security systems. Additionally, you want to make sure that the retailer of the home security system knows whether or not the DIY security system is going to impact your insurance premium adversely.
The next thing you want to do is compare several security systems and not just decide on the first one that is advertised or recommended. No two systems are the same, nor is the pricing and quality of them. So make sure you do your homework and put in the due diligence necessary before making your selection. Sometimes the bargain systems will wind up costing you a lot more money in the long run, especially when the system is a cheap import from overseas or you need to lay out additional funds for the purchase of the tools necessary to install the system, which brings up the following bit of advice.
When researching the different security systems on the market, make sure you have the tools that are required to perform the job. In most instances, you can get all the information you need by searching through these different systems online (if you have a computer and an internet connection). Additionally, you want to consider whether or not you have ever used those types of tools before. Just remember that saving money on a low-quality home security system may wind up costing you more if you have to spend a lot of money on the tools to install it.
